The new Sewage Sludge Ordinance was passed in October 2017. This makes phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge mandatory after a transitional period. For sewage treatment plants, this means considering a concept for recovery, technology providers must comply with the legal requirements with their plants and it is also important that the recovered phosphorus is also applied on the market. This is the only way to actually close material cycles and use resources efficiently. In this phase of upheaval, a constant flow of information is necessary in order to involve all players along the entire value chain. The background to the recovery of phosphorus is, among other things, the geographical limitation of natural raw material deposits to a few countries. Europe is currently almost completely dependent on imports of the raw material.
