Ensuring a reliable water supply increasingly depends on water reuse. Reliability extends far beyond drinking water supply. It encompasses agricultural, urban, and industrial use. The “Fit for Purpose” approach helps define the necessary level of (waste)water treatment. Since 2023, a new EU directive has introduced quality criteria for this purpose. Risk management for “Fit for Market” is an integral part of this approach. Regulations and standards in partner countries also shape the conditions for economically viable production of globally traded goods.
This session will showcase successful market-oriented water reuse projects from three continents. Together, we will identify transferable models of enabling environments and best practices in technological implementation. In this context the technical associations of the German water industry, DWA and DVGW, also support the development of technical rules that bridge the gap between legal requirements and operational practice.
