Every day in Germany alone, around 30 fires break out in waste disposal facilities and collection vehicles due to improperly disposed of batteries and rechargeable batteries. The number of major fires in recycling plants is growing alarmingly, with noticeable repercussions for the entire waste disposal infrastructure. For years, fires caused by improperly disposed of batteries have been increasing dramatically – resulting in billions of euros in damages and threatening the livelihoods of employees, firefighters, and residents in surrounding communities. Insurers are responding by raising premiums or excluding coverage altogether.
